Profile
Couture often implies over-the-top, unwearable, and unaffordable runway fashion for the stratospherically elite, but the word’s literal meaning, “sewing,” is what informs designer Shannon McLean’s handmade line, Cose Belle. Working out of a clean-swept, brightly lit apartment, McLean personally tends to her shop, offering custom-tailoring to fit her clients. Because of its appointment-only policy, the merchandise on display depends in large measure on what a customer needs: While McLean is best known for her simple, elegant wedding gowns, she also makes a line of ‘50s- and ‘60s-inspired separates, including a pair of signature wool trousers available nearly year-round; blazers and pencil skirts in solid black or boldly patterned fabric; and an Audrey Hepburn-inspired cocktail suit available on request. The store is far from scene-y, but rest assured you’re in good company—a slew of uptown socialites regularly visit, for seasonal updates to their sensational wardrobes. — Faran Alexis Krentcil
