Among the rundown discount leather and souvenir shops dotting Orchard Street, Sheherazade resembles something of a Moroccan palace. Brothers and co-owners Aziz and Rachid Ouassil take frequent buying trips to faraway destinations like Syria and Morocco to handpick the furnishings and home accessories found in their store. The dimly lit space pulsates with Middle Eastern music and showcases traditional hand-carved cedar tables, decorative floor pillows piled several feet high, throne-like chairs inlayed with bone and mother-of-pearl, and tinted glass lanterns hanging like ornaments from the ceiling. Smaller, inherently gifty imports, like glasses accented with gold leaf or hand-beaded slippers, will make you feel like royalty at a modest price.
