It’s easy to spot Shisha, with its storefront windows packed with pipes, hookahs, and bubblers of every size, shape, and color. This Village smoke shop has an eclectic assortment of cigarettes, tins of loose tobacco, and a walk-in humidor stocked with Macanudos and Cohibas, most of them under ten dollars. But the majority of the store is reserved not for tobacco but for the vessels used to smoke it: flavored rolling papers, cigarette holders, blown-glass “water pipes,” and five-chamber bubblers among them. A slightly smaller back room holds a plethora of hookahs, as well as replacement hoses, carrying cases, incense, and a whole cabinet of stash boxes camouflaged as soda cans and other benign household items. This despite the fact that signs posted around the store insist, “All products in the store are for tobacco use only.”
