In 2004, Shoe Mine opened in the south Slope to offer the neighborhood higher-end shoes specialized for comfort. The 600-square-foot shop has styles from roughly twenty vendors—more fashionable brands such as Chie Mihara and Camper rather than classic comfort labels like Rockport and Birkenstock. A big customer hit, for instance, are the Cole Haan pumps made with Nike air technology. The store also sells a growing selection of clothing, carefully chosen to match the shoes’ classically stylish aesthetic. There are pieces from Charlotte Ronson, John Varvatos, and denim maker J Brand—as well as some handbags and jewelry from Love Heals and local designer Temah M.
