With an eclectic mix of decorative art glass, paisley-print silk ties, amber jewelry, and hand-pressed stationery, The Shop @ Scandinavia House puts designers from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Sweden, and Norway front and center. The contents of the white cubbyholes and museum-shop shelving of this one-room store—just past the cultural center’s colorful ground-floor café—changes several times a season. Crayfish loomed into kitchen linens recall the midsummer festivals of Sweden; Alvar Aalto’s distinctive vases echo Scandinavia’s many lakes; and a striking bracelet handmade from reindeer leather evokes northern Finland. In warmer months, tangerine and turquoise wallets are common, along with apple-print umbrellas and cotton blankets (suggestively stored near picnic-ready Nordic nibbles and bottles of glögg). In winter, the inventory turns to thick mohair blankets and chunky knit sweaters, and the store takes over the building’s second-floor space with extensive holiday ornament and gift offerings. Trunk shows and designer appearances fill the shop year-round.
