Since 1965, Silvano Lattanzi and his small staff of artisans have been crafting elegant, high-end men’s shoes from their base in the Ancora province of Italy. With the opening of his eponymous atelier on Madison Avenue in 2006, New York sophisticates now sink into plush carpeting and buttery leather chairs while perusing Lattanzi’s 50-plus styles. Though the brand offers ready-to-wear items, most clients prefer to make an appointment for a private fitting and then commission their own custom-made pair, which takes approximately three months to be completed and delivered from the terra della madre. Loafers and lace-ups in antiqued calf-skin and cordovan shell are among the most popular styles; other exotic materials, including crocodile, alligator, and lizard skin, are also for sale. Just be sure your pocketbook is as well-lined as your insoles will be: a custom-made pair starts at $5,300, and ready-to-wear styles begin at $3,175. Think of it as a good investment: With the proper care these shoe’s have a life span upwards of 20 years. A limited selection of women’s styles are also available.
