After working for years as a stockbroker in Madison, Wisconsin, Mackenzi Farquer decided to ditch the power suits and follow her passion for art all the way to the New York School of Interior Design. In April 2007, the career change became complete when the spirited DIY-er opened Site, a garage turned funky home-décor shop stocked with contemporary artwork and vintage housewares from around the country. Fellow aesthetes will appreciate quaint touches like napkins with hand-embroidered pie slices, mirrored bird coat hooks, and floral-striped dining chairs. Craftier shoppers in search of spur-of-the-moment projects can also choose from paint-swatch notebooks, twig-carved colored pencils, and bumblebee needle-felting kits. Even if you don’t plan on buying, whimsical snack-holder labels like “A rad candy jar” and “Just like my Grandma’s” make browsing a worthwhile venture.
