Profile

This venue is closed.

Part of a disappearing breed of specialty retailers (like the Town Shop's bra lady, and the Lower East Side's Salwen Umbrella), The Sock Man has been keeping New Yorker gams and dogs warm, comfortable, and fashionable since 1983. Amiably brusk, Marty the Sock Man (no last name please) will discuss the quality, durability, size variations, and fiber content of any pair of his wares—and there are hundreds of them: Socks, tights, pantyhose, and thigh-highs line the walls of his tiny East Village shop and spill into a street fair-style stall on the buzzing sidewalk out front. Everyday black, brown, and gray trouser socks hang next to rainbow, ruffled, crocheted, and animal-print creations, as well as toe socks, the sort that fit like gloves. A small selection of suspenders, garters, and arm and leg warmers add variety to the theme. It's here that gym-goers find their tube socks and tennis footies, punk-rock kids their fishnets and striped knee-highs, and In-Style slaves the leg covering du jour. Hue, Hot Sox, Nicole Miller, Wigwam, Jockey, and Calvin Klein comprise the store's primary brands, augmented by The Sock Man's own eponymous line. All sell for better prices than you'll find most anywhere.
