Sohung Tong (“Tom” to most) started his own label just five years out of Parsons, originally selling from a stand at Nolita’s Young Designers Market. He launched his own boutique in the fall of 2008, staking out a spot on a trendy strip of the East Village dotted with vintage shops and a smattering of other young-designer flagships. Exposed brick walls and minimalist white shelves give the space a familiar downtown feel, though Tong’s collection is anything but typical. His apparel spans the racks along one side of the shop, offering wool coats embellished with decorative whorls of zippers, bodices made from a patchwork of neckties, and dresses with long, elaborate ruched skirts. The opposite wall displays the apparel and accessories of other local designers, including MADBIGFRO, Vernakular, and bubble skirts by Amparo3. Delicate, mobile-like earrings by Maiden Lane and ruby and gold cocktail rings by Kyoto Honda stand out among the extensive jewelry collection.
