This shoebox-sized boutique displays the Sophia Eugene line from New York-based designer Christopher Crawford, who is also one half of the design pair behind the flirty frocks of the Christopher Deane label. Crawford conceived the Sophia Eugene collection as an affordable, dressed-down alternative to Christopher Deane, with simpler cuts, flowing fabrics, and classic, feminine silhouettes. Although Christopher Deane is available in boutiques across the city, this is the only outpost for Sophia Eugene, a favorite among the downtown social set. The shop occupies a tiny space on Cornelia St. that was once a meat freezer, and it’s now decked out with painted floral walls, blue velvet furniture, and a chandelier overhead. The wares cover three long racks, featuring brightly patterned tanks with frayed necklines, gauzy polka dot blouses, jersey knit skirts, wide leg linen trousers, and bold, silky cocktail dresses. But the main focal point is a seductive gold mannequin sprawled across a desk in the center of the store, modeling a top hat and one of Crawford’s glossy, chic numbers.
