The large corkscrew painted on the wall of this brick-and-mortar Lower East Side unisex boutique is an homage to the space’s previous life as a wine store. While the booze is long gone, the festive atmosphere remains at Spec, short for “spectacular.” A riotous assortment of clothes hangs from black-iron poles and industrial-size nails driven into the wall. Double-collared polo shirts, bold-print Hawaiian button-downs, argyle sweater-vests, and dragon imagery dominate the menswear, which mostly comes from Japanese lines like Joge Martin and Manydope that are hard to find stateside. By contrast, the women’s styles are principally from New York designer Emmez and include front-tying, ruffle-necked blouses and tasseled handbags. Both colorful, flashy stitching and faded denim are common motifs among the eclectic fashions.
