After Paul Sperry noticed his cocker spaniel’s ability to run across ice without slipping in 1935, he was inspired to create the first non-slip line of boat shoes. Thus, Sperry Top-Sider was born. Seventy odd years later, this quaint company set up its first stand-alone shop in Manhattan’s Flatiron District. Aside from being used for boating, the leather and canvas shoes have now also become de rigueur for preppy patrons worldwide, a summer staple that works on land and at sea. There are an assortment of variations on the original design made with everything from snakeskin to blue suede and a self-service stockroom where customers can find their size and style without dealing with a salesman.
