Comic book aficionados from as far away as Europe and Japan pencil St. Mark’s Comics into their New York itineraries, and for good reason: The modestly-sized store is filled with as many books, toys, and sundry collectibles as there are fans to snatch them up. Hulk issue 181, the first appearance of Wolverine? Check. Spidey 129, the Punisher’s debut? You bet. The endearingly eggheaded staff helps customers root out rarities and locate obscure superheros(ines). Though releases less than a month old make up a sizable chunk of the selection, most of the store’s space is devoted to nostalgia items such as plastic-bagged antique G.I. Joes, vintage comic T-shirts and jackets, and long-forgotten heroes like Power Man and Iron Fist. Graphic novels, art-house publications, and manga (some of it highly erotic) all have their own sections. St. Mark’s buys as well as sells, and the bulging boxes towards the back of the store are a subtle reminder that the best finds are perhaps yet to be revealed.
