On a prime Fifth Avenue block now dominated by Italian fashion stalwarts—Ferragamo, Zegna—this all-American brand more than holds its own, selling wearable, distinctive wool-rayon knitwear designed by founder Marie Gray since 1962. Given the company’s 2005 pick of Angelina Jolie as their spokeswoman, image-makers at St. John Knits aim to portray their ideal customer as a sultry young socialite lounging by the pool, attended by a cadre of shirtless men; but the label’s boxy jackets, shiny gold buttons, and ultra-modest necklines are much more “Have the report on my desk by noon” than “Have Silvio bring me a caipirinha.” Classic suits and separates for the 40-plus crowd remain the company’s mainstay, despite the recent introduction of trendier pieces like denim jeans and leather pants. The boutique’s décor also seems more in synch with the company’s conservative reputation: The high-ceilinged, tan-carpeted expanse that greets customers after the doorman ushers them in conveys the luxury of an older, less-amped New York.
