Profile

This East Village staple’s specialty is critical theory and books on art and photography. Small-press publications (lots of poetry and criticism) and loads of magazines, too. A remainder table has last year’s hardcover literary titles for $5 to $15.

If the nation were a kindergarten, and cities its pupils, NYC would be the kid that has everything. Everything except good bookstores, that is. My little college town of Berkeley has more decent bookstores in a block than can be found in all five of the city's boroughs, something that never ceases to amaze me. Which is why St. Mark's is such a delight. Open late, with an educated staff and a diverse selection, St. Mark's is one of the few independent bookshops to have survived B&N's plan for world domination. Next time you feel like browsing bookshelves, bypass that monolith with its Starbuck's cafe, and head for St. Mark's. You won't be disappointed.
