Just down the street from the Jewish Children’s Museum in the heart of Crown Heights, Sterling Electronics serves as an all-purpose neighborhood electronics store. Laid out simply in a wide, carpeted rectangle, Sterling has shelves overflowing with small home appliances: Coffee grinders stack on top of waffle irons, which abut boom boxes and alarm clocks. Larger appliances like washers, dryers, and dishwashers crowd the aisles. There are selections of digital cameras, cell phones, and video games. And there's even a stool and screen set up in a corner for passport photos and an in-store photo lab for developing prints and enlargements. Sabbath observance constricts some of the store's weekend hours, but it draws a steady local clientele the rest of the week.
