For decades, the commercials have claimed that an educated consumer is Syms’ best customer, but it doesn’t take a genius to figure out the store’s real appeal: deep discounts—some up to 50 percent—on designer-name clothing. The chain’s rep is based on its stock of traditional suits and sports jackets, so it’s no surprise that the shirt and denim selections follow a similarly conservative model. For every pair of baggy Tommy Hilfiger black jeans, there are a dozen straight-legged Ralph Lauren blue denims—not to mention lots of basics like socks and boxers, plus plenty of golf shirts your uncle would love. Syms also carries an extensive inventory of children’s clothing and outerwear, and the women’s department rivals its men’s counterpart in the breadth of its DKNY ensembles, Calvin Klein coats, and Donald Pliner shoes. Syms is also famous for its month-long automatic markdowns, which see prices drop an additional 15 to 20 percent for every ten days that a dress stays on the hanger. And though it can be tricky finding an item that’s made it the full 30 days without being snatched up, take solace in the fact that you’re only paying a fraction of the regular cost on everything else right from the start.Sales
Monthly dividend sales on select clothing mean 10 percent off the regular Syms price.
