After earning a cult following in Tokyo and L.A., jewelry maven Tarina Tarantino opened her first New York boutique in 2006, decorating the small space with mint-green paint and glittered pink floors. Her chunky, sparkly baubles recall costume jewelry from childhood, including a Hello Kitty adorned “Pink Head” collection, a Swarovski crystal-studded line inspired by Barbie, and a Neon collection incorporating fluorescent butterfly beads. A former MAC makeup artist, the fuchsia-haired Tarantino gravitated toward bright colors and retro-glam long before she started designing her own jewelry. Many of her designs combine girly motifs with goth and glam accents: The Studio 54–inspired Bibarucci line features black horn scarabs and skulls mixed with glass pearls and leopard-print beads, while the I Love You/I Hate You collection includes necklaces spelling “I Hate You” surrounded by pink hearts and Swarovski crystals. The offerings come with a higher price tag than the Barbie trinkets of youth, however — simple Lucite bracelets start at $30, while elaborate, charm-heavy necklaces can reach $800.
