Profile

A small army of Ted Baker’s butlers helped the London-based designer unpack his knick knacks in this Meatpacking District boutique. That’s the concept, at least: emptied cartons labeled “Handle with Joy” serve as tabletops for neatly pressed shirts and shiny cufflinks, while ceramic saucers, stuffed squirrels, and fashionably worn books (presumably the cartons’ contents) decorate the walls. The intimate space, split evenly between versatile mens- and womenswear, has a more limited inventory than the label’s Soho location, but the brand’s floral tailored blouses and skirts are still on display, as are feminine, fitted leather jackets and seersucker day dresses, all of which can be tried on in one of six plush dressing rooms. (Men have a selection of slim fit pants, patterned ties, and cardigans to choose from.) Twinkling chandeliers fastened with dismantled parts further the store’s narrative (the idea being that the “butlers” broke a few things in transit and had to get creative when putting them back together), as do the empty mason jars at the checkout counter, which are nostalgically labeled with mentions of Baker’s fondest memories, “Christmas 1990,” for example, or “BBQ in June.”
