To look at its modest storefront, one wouldn’t guess the Drama Book Shop harbors such a wealth of shelf space, never mind a basement black-box theater and two upstairs workshops. This Theater District store has been a trusted resource for aspiring and professional theater folk since World War I. Its resident theater company, The Striking Viking Story Pirates, offers acting and writing classes to youngsters and does in-house performances, and local actors and teachers often rent out the premises for their own events. On the teardrop-shaped ground floor, American and British scripts take center stage, with at least four shelf units and one display table devoted to Shakespeare—though there are also smaller selections of Greek and Roman, African, Asian, and French plays. Supporting players include books on stagecraft, costumes, makeup kits; a multimedia section includes instructional DVDs by well-known thespians and CDs for mastering foreign accents from around the globe. For actors seeking work, there are listings of agents, producers, managers, and casting directors that are updated monthly. And a small balcony with musical scores and inviting seats provides an inspiring setting for some impromptu sotto-voce monologues.
