Profile
With an orthographically challenged flashing yellow sign and dismal fluorescent lighting, McAdam looks like countless other liquor stores where novelty-size buckets of bourbon and $7 Chardonnays grow dusty under faded pinups. But oenophiles might want to look closer: The stubby little store, a Gramercy feature since the end of Prohibition, also claims to hold the largest stock of Long Island wines in the world, a bounty of more than 175 labels from some two dozen vineyards. When owner Bob Fink discovered that a severe drought in the late eighties had become a boon for Long Island wineries, he set about buying every bottle he could find. McAdam’s stock now covers everything west of Montauk: Raphael (served at luxe eatery Gilt), Paumanok (2004 New York winery of the year), and many more, with few above $30. Bottles from other regions such as California and Australia are also well-represented.
SalesThe shop holds two semiannual sales, one in May and one from October to November, for customers who have signed up for its mailing list.
