Tom Binns’s so-called “megastore” is, in fact, not much larger than a walk-in closet. But the tongue-in-cheek “mega” refers to the jewelry designer’s aesthetic sensibility, which dictates that accessories can never be too big, colorful, or flashy. The shop is filled with bold, vibrant costume jewelry: One necklace is laden with grape-size jewels in a rainbow-array of colors. Others are decked with beads in Day-Glo orange, yellow, and pink. Still others feature dense, gleaming clusters of pearls. For those with cheeky tastes, the designer’s Anti-Luxxx line replaces jewels with metal plates embossed with words like RUBY, LARGE SAPPHIRE, and BIG FUCK OFF DIAMOND, all reinforcing the store’s refreshing philosophy that jewelry should be fun.
