Profile
Walking into the Tory Burch flagship store on Madison Avenue feels almost illicit. Creaking through the heavy orange doors, you pause to touch the gilded logo, a sure sign that you have arrived in Toryland. Immaculate interiors, scattered orchids, scented Tory candles wafting through the 19th-century townhouse combine to make you feel like an intruder in an expensive uptown home. The brainchild of Burch and her architect, Daniel Romualdez, the Madison outpost was intended to have a residential feel, which explains the smattering of china hanging delicately from accent walls and the comfortable-looking sofas with perfectly plump pillows. The five-story building houses everything the label has to offer. The first floor is dedicated to accessories, with handbags galore. As you climb the stairs past the black-and-white photographs of 1950s glamour, you reach the full range of womenswear and shoes, all interspersed with dizzying wallpaper prints and large Venetian mirrors.
