In an age of hyper-connectivity and emerging technologies, video artist Hiroko Rodriguez sought to create a place where she could seamlessly blend different several art forms. In early 2007, that idea turned into Travessia, a unique retail space that fuses visual arts and creative fashion into an innovative and interactive experience. Set apart from the Lower East Side’s posh stores on the quieter east end of Stanton Street, this concept-boutique-cum-gallery displays clothes and artwork side by side. Rotating installations from cutting-edge artists such as Harumi Ori and Julia Chiang line the gallery-white walls, while found furnishings and antique accents create a decidedly homey vibe. Rodriguez has acquired an eclectic blend of hard-to-find international women’s fashion labels such as Baum und Pferdgarten and HuiHui, along with emerging designers such as Margarita Saplala, whose printed cotton separates hang alongside the store’s other uniquely cut and structured designs. The fashionably adventurous come here for one-of-a-kind apparel and a one-of-a-kind experience, where the blurred line between art and fashion makes it anything but just “shopping.”
