Unlike a certain cupcake store several stops uptown, there are no lines spilling from this roomy downtown bakery. Compared to Magnolia’s cloyingly sweet baked goods, though, owner and chef Rachel Thebault’s creations are pretty avant-garde. (Peanut butter and jelly cupcakes are a popular item.) Thebault’s gallery of desserts runs the gamut from cookies and cakes to ice cream sandwiches and store-made chocolate bars—including “salt & pepper” chocolate, which is exactly what it sounds like. There is also Kobricks coffee brewing for those who want to linger at the in-store café or browse the selection of kitchenware, cards, and stationery. Upon request, Thebault’s staff will create ornately themed birthday cakes—they’ve done Scrabble- and iPod-themed cakes in the past—and on Sundays, the space is available to rent for private parties and baking lessons.
