Forget egg rolls, knishes and Jamaican beef patties. The latest hot snack contender comes from Unique Pastry, whose Fuji-native owners have perfected bing—a flat, palm-sized pie filled with meat and/or vegetables. The sesame-seed-dotted soft-crust pastry cradles such savories as spicy chicken, pork with scallions, hot and sour vegetables or the dessert-like red bean and lotus. With a few utilitarian tables in back, this shop is clearly geared towards commuters and locals craving take-out but it's worth noting that the pies freeze well for future lunches, too. Doughy pork-and-chive buns, congees, and a few other entrees round out the menu but remember: The bing's the thing.
