Long before this store opened in October 2008, Vampire Freaks was a website—a clothing retailer and social-networking site for Goths the world over, with a usership of almost two million. Many of the dim East Village store’s wares are straight out of a Tim Burton flick—metal-plated vests, straightjacket-like sweaters, and skeleton sweatshirts fill the racks and Beetlejuice and Nightmare Before Christmas statuettes dominate the shelves. But like the website, the store doesn’t limit itself to Goths; emo and punk fashions abound, as does industrial and EBM music. Ravers come looking for styles like Cyberdog’s reflective, glow-in-the dark stovepipe pants and Lip Service’s three-piece cherry-red nylon kimono. A rainbow of Manic Panic dyes and colorful socks in the cashier’s case greets visitors up front, but the mood grows more dark toward the back, where a second room with a greenish glow holds additional goods and the changing area.
