Profile

Verameat’s jewelry is a bit of an anomaly. It’s beautiful and dainty at first glance, but a closer look reveals daggers, brains, Vikings, and other unexpected curiosities. Although reminiscent of Monopoly pieces, designer and former model Vera Balyura’s miniature works aren’t your average top hat and thimble: Her handmade jewelry is a mash of whimsy and kitsch, eerie and elegant. The shop itself also strikes a similarly appealing discord: Red, wooden floors contrast starkly with the whitewashed walls, and black brocade mirrors reflect plaster hands that emerge from the wall, their fingers holding necklaces charmed with golden spinal cords, astronauts, and vampire teeth. A great spot to buy a truly unique and eccentric gift, the shop is an excellent addition to the flourishing East 9th Street indie designer scene.
