Some have a few beers and make embarrassing phone calls; others have a few beers and… buy hats. Village Scandal caters to the latter variety of drunkard by staying open late and encouraging a healthy spillover from neighboring McSorley's—and, more excitingly, by boozing-up browsers with occasional free champagne on weekday afternoons. In whatever case, this headwear store is about as close to a party as you can get in a shopping experience, with customers blithely playing dress-up with fedoras, spitfires and panamas accompanied by forties jazz standards that are as old-timey as the merchandise. Buckets of vintage scarves and displays of vintage jewelry and oversized novelty sunglasses make for more fun look-at-me antics, but the folks at Village Scandal really take hats seriously: There's a staff of in-house designers and, for around $60, they'll let you pick the fabric and create a personalized, fitted cap in a cloche, newsboy or pilot style.Extra
