There’s a string of shoe stores on West 72nd Street from Urban Outfitters to the Buttercup Bakery, but West is by far the most eye-catching. The brick-walled space is decorated with black-and-white photos of famous New Yorkers like Babe Ruth, Frank Sinatra, and John Lennon; their stark portraits contrast with the colorful streetwear styles, old and new, from vibrantly-hued vintage Starter jackets with screaming logos to bulky hi-top Nikes in electric neons and multi-colored pastels. Many of the shoes are limited edition and specialties include John Varvatos Converse in distressed fabrics and suede Clarks Wallabees. Canada Goose snowboard jackets and water-repellent North Faces, as well as graphic tees by Hellz Bellz and Adidas, complement the bold kicks. — Eileen Conlan
