White House | Black Market started in Baltimore in the eighties as two separate stores by the same company. White House offered all-white women’s clothes, while Black Market sold all black outfits. The popularity of both stores inspired the company to combine them into what sits on Fifth Avenue today. Best compared to Ann Taylor Loft, the lush shop with gorgeous chandeliers features items like shirtdresses, pencil skirts, and delicately pleated silk tops that can easily transition from the office to a dinner out. Although 80 percent of the store’s apparel is in the mainstay hues, there are also unexpected shots of sophisticated pinks, greens, blues, and grays. The classic sunglasses, beaded jewelry, and conservative shoes work for women of all ages, while more fashion-forward girls can find gems like silk empire-waist dresses with slim belts for the low three figures. The best-kept secret? Bridesmaids and weddinggoers who comb through the racks can find inexpensive yet chic dresses that they’ll actually want to wear again.Sales
