This East Village fixture has been baking vegan cakes, breads and cookies since 1978. Most of the sweets, made with creative ingredients like maple and agave syrups, fruit concentrates and organic oils, will also satisfy the non-vegan palate, though the highly dense bread probably won’t cause many conversions. The tiny space is mostly taken up by the kitchen in the back and a serving counter loaded with fruit bars, scones, sticky buns and other treats. A large selection of hot and live (raw food) soups and savory dishes, like spinach and mushroom empanadas and an appealing tofu pizza, make this a good lunch option as well. But plan on getting it to go, as there are just a few stools squeezed up against the wall. The in-house juice bar supplies smoothies, organic fruit sippers, and wheatgrass shots.
ExtraThe shop offers about 10 wheat-and-gluten-free items, for those with stricter dietary requirements, and also makes birthday and wedding cakes to order.
