Profile
William Poll first opened its doors in 1921, when Yorkville enjoyed a reputation for German- and European-style delicacies. Brass chandeliers still warm the shop’s dark interior, where rows of wooden shelves showcase a tantalizing assortment of gourmet foods and gift baskets. Treats like chocolate-dipped meringues and chocolate-covered angel cakes adorn the front windows; you’ll find fine cheeses, deli meats, and prepared salads inside, to offset the rich brownies and baklava. But Poll built its reputation on Baked Potato Thins, sublime starchy chips in a dozen flavors, including the Eurostyled classics Herbes de Provence and Shallot and Pepper along with Jalapeno and Moroccan Garlic, and pairs the salty snacks with sweet and savory dips like blue cheese, cucumber, smoked trout, and cheddy-chut, a savory paste redolent with mango and spice. Poll only uses whole Idaho potatoes, and cooks them in tiny batches. The chips are packaged in chic, crumble-proof boxes for easy shipping or toting out to the Hamptons. Just be sure to buy an extra box for the walk home.
