The workaday world of Midtown may be an odd spot for a shop that sells custom leather garments for after work and weekends, but that doesn’t stop Ron Shahar from trying to fulfill the leather needs and fantasies of his customers from a no-frills 59th Street store. Within a one-week window, Shahar’s Garment District factory can custom-make client designs or custom-fit dozens of jacket, skirt, and pant prototypes to any shopper’s figure. The owner only works with fine hides—the lamb and goatskins from Spain, Italy, and England are well-tanned—and can dye materials any one of more than 150 colors, ranging from natural to fluorescent. Workshop also sells off-the-rack vests, blazers, and trench coats in basic cuts and neutral hues, as well as full-length, thick-skinned, wool-lined shearling in the winter, and light-colored, lightweight pants and skirts in the summer. The warmer months also bring out some fabric items because, as Shahar explains, “no man can live on leather alone.”
