Originally founded by Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon, the X-Girl apparel brand takes its inspiration from music, pop art, and a heavy dose of girl power. When Gordon sold her shares in 1997, the line moved its design and production teams to Japan; the look is now full-on Tokyo street style. X-Girl’s Nolita boutique is decorated with florescent wallpaper, sloping wood displays, and irreverent touches like miniature mid-century modern chairs resting on top of shelves. The stock features funky, colorful looks for teens and young adults, including striped jersey mini-skirts, bright tube tops, and deconstructed tees, plus a load of offbeat accessories like eighties-inspired costume jewelry, studded belts, and cheeky vinyl purses. For those who fancy a bit of culture with their retail experience, the store’s rotating art exhibits showcases the work of girl photographers, designers, and graffiti artists.
