Trends tend to consume Meatpacking District shops like wildfire, but not Yigal Azrouel’s signature showcase. On racks that float above its cast concrete floors, this bare-brick store consistently carries a sophisticated collection of well-tailored, richly-textured evening and office wear. As a younger brother to five sisters, Azrouel learned how to flatter women, and that’s exactly what he aims to do as a draper: His multi-paneled gowns, some with open backs and halter necks, others with empire waists and cap sleeves, are designed to hug and highlight all types of figures. Subtly chic career women depend on Azrouel for delicate pointelle knits, printed silk blouses, carefully-cut slacks, and sexy jersey dresses, while the designer’s fondness for combining textures, exemplified by a feathered, sequined, chiffon stole, help his creations stand out. Azrouel’s runway designs are sold at high-end department stores, but for his experimental designs, fans flock to this 14th Street outpost.
