Leather and fur factory heir Alain Schimel and Italian designer Zilli (rhymes with Gigli) have been friends since they were children in Lyon, but it wasn’t until the 1970s that they teamed up to launch this luxe menswear brand. The French company has dozens of outposts across Europe and the Middle East, but this location, opened within the Four Seasons Hotel in October 2009, marks its first foray into the U.S. The decor is rich and modern, with spotlights accenting various merchandise, an oversized golden ZILLI logo decking one wall, and two screens playing videos of Schimel's son, the managing director. Everything in the sleek space is custom-made, from the mahogany chairs to the cashmere-wool blend rugs. The store caters to the sort of man who’s willing to splurge on a $230 hand-sewn silk tie, specializing in furs and exotic skins: crocodile coats with mink collars, baby alligator Oxfords, and python travel bags. And though this is namely a menswear brand, if a valued customer is interested in buying a $189,000 ankle-length sable coat for his wife or a pair of snakeskin boots for his child, the company will fly a salesperson out to his residence with a selection of merchandise.
