Pakistani-born designer Bushra Gill got her start in fashion with a petite sportswear boutique on E. 9th St. As the area quietly evolved into a downtown bridal destination in the late-nineties, Gill followed suit, crafting one-of-a-kind gowns for her longtime clients. She's since gone wedding-only, including bridesmaid, flower girl, and mother-of-the-bride, and now displays her collection of globally-inspired formalwear at her modest midtown atelier. Favoring heavy silks like dupioni and taffeta, Gill is best known for her affordable, simple bridesmaid looks like the best-selling Suki, with its peek-a-boo shock of Asian brocade, and the two-piece Brigitte bustier and Kerri skirt. Younger members of the wedding party can choose from the demure Meg/Nanette ensemble for junior bridesmaids or the sweet Morgan for flower girls, but it's Bushra's sophisticated, custom-designed wedding gowns that give budget-conscious brides a chance to shine.
