Profile

First, there was the book. Then the perennial cartoon. Then the movie starring Jim Carrey. Now that green guy who makes Scrooge seem like a Pollyanna is taking his act to Broadway. Directed by Matt August, the musical adaptation of the Dr. Seuss classic reprises songs like "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch" and adds some new ones like "WhatchamaWho" and "Santa for a Day." For a narrative twist, Max the Dog will narrate the Whoville hater's mean-spirited attempt to steal Christmas. (The Lion King's Patrick Page tackles the title role.)

  • Finian’s Rainbow

This marvelous, slightly unhinged revival succeeds because it refuses to wink at the material or treat it as quaint.

  • The Understudy

Theresa Rebeck’s warm backstage comedy features a thoroughly excellent trio, but the heart of the show is Julie White’s performance.
