Profile
Post-Hairspray, John Waters is hardly a cult figure anymore. In fact, this follow-up is the season’s only musical with a real shot at blockbuster status. But don’t buy tickets because of the Zeitgeist. See it because Cry-Baby the movie really was the ultimate distillation of Waters's love-hate relationship with the candy-coated fifties, and because the score—by a Daily Show writer and a co-founder of Fountains of Wayne—is sure to take numbers like "The Anti-Polio Picnic" and "Thanks for the Nifty Country!" in bold, new directions.
