Profile

Tarell Alvin McCraney’s trilogy The Brother/Sister Plays blends raw language with lyrical poetry and mythology with reality, suffusing the modest story, set in a Louisiana housing project, with magic theatricality. Incredibly, he finished writing this hugely ambitious, four-and-a-half-hour work before the age of 29.

  • Finian’s Rainbow

This marvelous, slightly unhinged revival succeeds because it refuses to wink at the material or treat it as quaint.

  • The Understudy

Theresa Rebeck’s warm backstage comedy features a thoroughly excellent trio, but the heart of the show is Julie White’s performance.
