Profile

The slutty cheerleader. The sullen rebel. The spastic geek. Creator Ken Davenport trots out The Breakfast Club stereotypes in this cheese-filled ode to the synth-pop decade. Welcome to the Wanaget High Senior Prom, circa 1989. In the vein of Tony 'n Tina's Wedding, exchange student Feung Schwey, head cheerleader Whitley Whitaker, and method bad boy Nick Fender (in full Judd Nelson regalia) flirt, heckle, and sidle up to the gaggles of giddy bachelorettes and sweet sixteens who camp out on the dance floor for the interactive drama. Between screeching blocks of retro classics, pleather-clad emcee Johnny Hughes cajoles wallflowers to "Walk Like an Egyptian" and break out their best Running Man. Until the booze sets in. Then the evening devolves into a group sing-along to house anthems like "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" and "Don't Stop Believing." The chance to rewrite history by casting the nerd as prom king—audience members vote their favorites for the coveted crowns—may prove irresistible to the revelers who come hopped up on reruns of I Love the 80's. But for the unconverted, the dinner theater schlock kills any nostalgic buzz with all the cringe-inducing lameness of an actual high school dance.

A transportive theatrical rapture that consistently overspills the banks of its own limitations.

  • NewsiesNewsies

With a cast that is uniformly strong down to the rank and file, this musical is finally onstage where it belongs.
