ALEK WEK

At 14, Alek Wek was forced to flee Sudan for London when civil war made it too dangerous to stay. It was a long road to November 1997, when Alek became
the first dark-skinned African model to be on the cover of Elle. The cover prompted Oprah Winfrey to gush: "If you'd been on the cover when I was growing up, I would have had a different concept of who I was." That said, Alek refuses go-sees that request black models: "It's disrespectful," she says.
