Greek Cinema Showcase

Screamin' Jay Hawkins is as expected at a Greek Film Festival as Michael Dukakis at a blues joint. But that's what makes I Put a Spell on Me, Nicholas Triandafyllidis's joyful documentary at the American Museum of the Moving Image's Greek Cinema Showcase, so appealing. Hawkins (pictured), the weirdo fifties bluesman and rock-and-roller, always wanted to sing opera, and Triandafyllidis was to film his debut in Athens. Unfortunately, Screamin' Jay died shortly before that performance, and the film became a tribute, including interviews with Jim Jarmusch, Bo Diddley, and the Animals' Eric Burdon and extensive footage of the wild man himself — a figure whose stage show, equipped with coffins and explosives, was tame compared with his World War II experiences and prodigious womanizing. Opens May 10, with a Triandafyllidis Q&A after the screening.
