Divine Intervention

Episodic, absurdist Palestinian comedy from director-star Elia Suleiman is primarily composed of a series of deadpan vignettes, usually featuring interactions that gradually go awry—from neighborhood squabbles to tense arguments at Israeli checkpoints. Punctuated with bizarre, surreal flights of fancy, hypnotic film sometimes seems a bit too symbolic for its own good. Winner of numerous international awards. (1 hr. 30 mins.; NR) — BILGE EBIRI
