Aliens and Ear Worms on the Undulating Curve of Shifting Expectations!

Usually, as Oscar season approaches, we’re buzzing over a half-dozen contenders. But Up in the Air peaked too early, Nine was more like a two, and we’re hard-pressed to recall whether The Lovely Bones has even been released. Avatar, meanwhile, has proved Curve-proof: The hype (super effects, so-so story) turned out to be spot-on, so you can’t be truly disappointed or truly surprised. Thus it falls to other mediums to excite us: a new novel from Sam Lipsyte, Battlestar Galactica prequel Caprica, and neo-preppie Afro-pop band Vampire Weekend, who may have finally ear-wormed their way into our hearts.
