Congratulations, Jonathan Franzen: You’ve broken the Curve. Franzen’s new novel, Freedom (perhaps you’ve heard of it?), was getting rave reviews even as people were decrying it, even as other people were decrying the decriers. Thus Franzen bends time and space to appear twice on the Curve simultaneously. (It’s either that or add a new category: backlash to the backlash to the backlash to the backlash.) Meanwhile, Ben Affleck reminds people he’s a director, Tom Ford reminds people he’s a designer, and the Jets remind people they’re the Jets, at least in Week One.
