NEW YORK VIEW
Jeremy Irons is his usual engagingly awkward self as a manager in the punk-rocking seventies trying to coax reclusive opera legend Maria Callas (Fanny Ardant) back into the limelight with a film. Veteran director Franco Zeffirelli knows his milieu well: His affection for Callas and the old-world elegance she embodies is palpable, even if the story remains all surface.
CINEMASOURCE SYNOPSIS This fantasy involves the last few months in the life of opera star Maria Callas, who comes out of reclusive retirement to film 'Carmen,' only to confront painful memories of her past love affair with billionaire Aristotle Onassis and the fact that she can no longer pretend to have the voice she once had.
