SPOTLIGHT
Think Florida had it bad? Take a look at Jennifer Lopez’s film career, which, like Florida, teemed with natural beauty before being overdeveloped and then buffeted by disasters—in her case, Angel Eyes, Enough, Maid in Manhattan, Gigli, Jersey Girl, Ben Affleck. It’s been a long time since Out of Sight, or even The Wedding Planner, and now Lopez is trying to dig out from under the damage. This fall, she embarks on her own Reinvention Tour, with two new films and an appearance on James Lipton’s Inside the Actors Studio (clearing the way, one suspects, for Madonna). First, though, Lopez stars opposite Richard Gere in Shall We Dance?—a made-for-box-office remake of the lovely Japanese film about a repressed businessman who takes up dancing—opening October 15. Then Lopez makes a stab at critical approval opposite Robert Redford in An Unfinished Life, directed by Lasse Hallström (The Shipping News), out December 24, just in time for—could it be? Oh, God, no—Oscar season. By Logan Hill, New York Magazine
CINEMASOURCE SYNOPSIS For longer than he can remember, John Clark has led a dull existence--and even with a successful career, charming wife and loving family, he still feels something is missing as he makes his mind-numbing commute through the city each day. But one night, on his evening ride home, he looks up to see a beautiful woman staring through the window of a dance studio. Haunted by her gaze, John impulsively jumps off the train and signs up for dance lessons--and his whole life begins to change. Now, he's entering a world he never imagined--the colorful world of competitive ballroom dancing. It's a place filled with grand passions, bitter rivalries, great friends and strange couples and it's about to reignite the excitement in John's life--not to mention the lives of his family, dance instructors and fellow classmates--in ways he's never dreamed.
