NEW YORK REVIEW
James Wan’s horror film opens strong—with two frightened men stranded in the dark, wondering aloud about where they are and why. As the lights flicker on, the two guys (Cary Elwes and Leigh Whannell) stare at the chains on their feet, then at a corpse slumped between them in an empty bathroom. It seems like we might be in for something new—maybe even a smart horror movie stripped down to two chilling performances. Except that the setup is the first of many red herrings, as the film rips off its arty skin and emerges as an overblown Rube Goldberg contraption of sadistic plot devices. In this rules-loving horror film, a madman serial killer devises orderly games that are both increasingly cruel and surprisingly rigid (that is, unless you’re familiar with this genre). A woman cuts into a man’s stomach and digs a key out of his living body. A detective (Danny Glover) goes mad. A puppet head cackles. The gobs of fake blood and spilled intestines are fine—but diabolical papier-mâché? Not so much. Reviewed by Logan Hill, New York Magazine
